Do you need to get a new boiler at the lowest cost possible?

If you’re looking to save money, and really need a new boiler, it can be daunting. There are so many models, and installations out there. Perhaps you’re even looking for a cheap, short term boiler to tide you over before you move home in the next couple of years.

As an experienced engineer, I like to do my best to help. I know what it’s like to be in a tight spot. That’s why I’ve put together some of the best tips to help you get a new boiler at the lowest possible cost.

1. Shop around for the best deal

Firstly, I say this time and time again: DO YOUR RESEARCH! I always recommend getting at least 2 – 3 fixed price quotes, so you’ll be sure to get the best deal. If you’re looking to get the cheapest possible quote (which isn’t always the best), just ensure you’re hiring a competent Gas Safe registered engineer.

Also, never pay cash or money up front – only when the job is done. Remember; if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

TIP: Here are 8 things to do before accepting a boiler quote. I don’t want to see anyone getting ripped off!

2. Check out what finance is available

Sometimes getting a boiler in finance is the only way. I’ve just written a blog on the Home Energy Scotland loan, which is one of the best finance options available for homeowners right now. Be aware that this does change constantly, so do your homework on what funding might be available to you.

You could also go for options such as deferred credit, consumer credit or even use your credit card! It’s not always the best option, and they may not always work out the cheapest in the long-run, so be smart.

3. Choose a budget boiler brand

There are a lot of boiler brands on the market. Some are really good value for money, and others are cheaper than you should ever realistically pay if you want your boiler to last. So, if you’re looking at cutting your costs, but you’re planning on staying in your current home for a few more years yet, I’d recommend going for something like Baxi or Ideal.

These still have up to 10-year guarantees, but will save you money over premium brands like Worcester Bosch.

Other options include Glow-worm, Vokera and Intergas. I’d still recommend going for a boiler with a good 7 – 8 year guarantee, at least. Check out our combi boiler brand comparison to give you a better idea of what’s currently available on the market.

4. Keep your existing controls

If there’s nothing wrong with your existing boiler controls – why not keep them? They might have been upgraded in the past few years, or have managed to outlive your current boiler. Keeping your current controls could actually save you around £100 – £200. It’s definitely worth a shot!

If you do need new controls for your boiler, speak to your engineer. They might be able to offer you a deal, or even a freebie – if you don’t ask, you don’t get! They can, at the very least, advise you on which is the best value for money.

5. Do some of the work yourself

I published a blog a while ago about how to save money on your boiler installation. It involved doing a lot of the work yourself, which isn’t something many people think of. For instance, you could strip out the tanks and pipework yourself, core your own flue hole, take a trip to the tip and dispose of your own waste, or rip out some of your old flooring if you’re thinking of changing it anyway.

Speak to your chosen engineer about this, and see how they’d feel about you doing some of the work yourself. Explain that you need to save on some installation costs, and they should be happy to advise.

6. Get it installed before you move

This one only works if you’ve just bought your property. I always say it’s cheaper to have a boiler installed in an empty house, compared to one that’s fully furnished! If this is an option for you, it could be a way to help you save more money.

It could save you the cost of half a day – or a full day’s work! You can’t say that’s not worth it.

7. Get £400 cash-back for your old boiler

Many boiler companies/installers will offer £400 cashback for your old boiler via their scrappage scheme. This is because the price of scrap metal is so high. This will really help towards the cost of your new boiler, so it’s always worth asking.

TIP: Companies such as Scottish Power or British Gas also offer these schemes.

Conclusion

Need a new boiler at the lowest cost possible? Need it fast? If you don’t have time to save up, I feel you. I’ve helped advise many customers who have been in this situation, and it’s never fun. But fear not! The above tips should help you find a low-cost boiler for your home – even if it means doing some of the work yourself! Speak to your engineer and see what they say.
