Wondering whether you should replace your boiler in the summer or winter?

I speak to many customers who are on the fence about whether they should replace their boiler, or wait until winter when they actually have to worry about it. It’s understandable; I mean, when it’s boiling hot and all you want to do is eat ice cream or go to the beach, the last thing on your mind is your boiler.

However, if you’re feeling unsure about your old boiler and if it’s actually going to last the winter, now (summer) could be a good time to replace it.

Let me explain why, below.

Why you should replace your boiler in the summer

Okay, so I know this isn’t always feasible. Maybe your boiler seems absolutely fine just now, or you don’t have the money to replace it at the moment. But trust me, if your boiler needs replaced, summer is definitely the time to do it. Here are some of the biggest reasons why:

1. Winter is the busiest time for engineers

The last thing you want is for your boiler to die on you in the winter. That’s because winter is absolutely the WORST time to contact an engineer. They’re usually out on jobs, doing emergency work, or booked for weeks in advance.

In the meantime, you could be stuck without heating or hot water for months on end.

Even if your old boiler is still working away happily, you could be struggling to find someone to carry out a replacement.

2. You won’t be cold whilst work is carried out

You don’t want to be freezing cold whilst your boiler is replaced, do you? Another good benefit of getting a boiler replaced in summer is that you won’t even notice a drop in temperature.

Which is especially good considering replacing a boiler can take 1 – 2 days. It’ll mean you won’t have to stock up on blankets!

3. You won’t be in a rush to pick a boiler

If your boiler breaks down in winter, you’ll be rushing to:

  1. Find a boiler company – ANY boiler company – who is willing to carry out the work
  2. Choose a boiler that’s best suited to your home

This could lead to you making a rash judgement, and not necessarily getting the best deal or the best boiler for your home.

Getting your boiler installed in the summer months means you’ll be able to take your time, and make an informed decision. You can also shop around for the best engineer for the job!

4. You’ll have peace of mind for the winter

Finally, a summer boiler installation means that you won’t have to worry when winter rolls around. Your boiler will most likely be guaranteed for 7 – 10 years, so if anything does go wrong in winter, help will be just a phone call away.

Isn’t that a nice feeling?

Always be prepared for the winter months

I know that it’s not always possible to see into the future, and boilers have been known to break down over winter. After all, that’s when they have to work the hardest. But it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for the colder months.

One of the best bits of advice I can give you is to perform a winter DIY boiler check. I’ve written a blog about how to carry out one out right here – it’s fairly simple stuff. Just check everything’s working properly, vent the radiators, add extra insulation if necessary, and ensure your condensate pipe is protected from freezing.

Conclusion

I hope this blog has been helpful when working out if you should replace your boiler in the summer or winter. Although it’s not always possible to tell if your boiler will last the winter – and things do happen that are out of our control – you can take the above steps to help feel reassured.

A winter DIY boiler check is essential for any household. This will help prepare you for winter – that is, if you don’t have a boiler that’s still under warranty.
