Need to know exactly how much a Glow-worm boiler services costs?
Whether you have a new Glow-worm boiler, or one that’s been happily working away in the background for years, you’ll know how important your annual service is.
Arranging a yearly boiler service will not only make sure your boiler is safe and running efficiently. Plus, if you have a new boiler, it will keep your warranty up-to-date.
As an experienced engineer, I’m quite familiar with Glow-worm models – I’ve fitted and serviced quite a lot over the years! So, I’m also very aware of all their quirks and faults.
With that in mind, I’m going to tell you a bit more about the brand, and how much an annual Glow-worm boiler service costs.
Glow-worm boilers: a brief background
Some of my customers are surprised to learn that Glow-worm is actually part of the Vaillant group (a premium brand and inventor of the combi boiler). So, although Glow-worm is a very affordable option, they still come with a great reputation and decent guarantee. Plus, the company has its own dedicated engineers to cover both Vaillant AND Glow-worm.
I’m personally quite a fan of Glow-worm, as parts are easily available and reasonably priced. And as you can imagine, they’re also a popular choice for many of my customers! Many budget boilers tend to come with more simultaneous faults than premium brands, but with Glow-worm you can typically replace just one part and the boiler will fire back up.
Of course, it’s important to arrange regular checks for any boiler or gas appliance. For an older Glow-worm boiler, it’s even more important, as things wear and break down unless they are serviced.
If you’ve only just moved house to find a Glow-worm boiler in your property, you might not be sure if it’s five or 15 years old. Arranging a service can let you know how healthy your boiler is, and how long it might last.
Glow-worm boiler service costs explained
Is your Glow-worm boiler is functioning as normal, without any errors or fault codes? In that case, a standard service should set you back around £90 including VAT. However, the price won’t be the same everywhere, as there’s no set standard. Some companies may charge slightly less, whilst national companies can charge up to £120.
TIP: If you know your Glow-worm boiler has a fault, please tell the engineer in advance when booking your service. Leaving it until they arrive could be frustrating for both parties, and may cost more.
I’d also recommend hiring a Glow-worm accredited engineer when arranging a service for your boiler. Their in-depth knowledge and training will ensure your boiler is in the best possible hands.
An example of this is when I went to visit a faulty Glow-worm boiler a national company had shut down a while back. They told the customer it couldn’t be repaired, and they’d have to fit a replacement in a new location. However, as accredited engineers, we were able to fix the boiler and got their heating and hot water working again.
The customer still went on to replace the boiler, but we were able to fit it in the same cupboard with a twin-flue system – something they’d previously been told was impossible. Always check the internet regarding regulations and specifications.
What’s the best way to pay?
Some homeowners prefer to pay for their Glow-worm service up front, however another popular method is via a service plan. This is becoming quite a common option offered by many companies in the Edinburgh area.
Service plans are usually charged on a monthly basis – our standard one starts at £7.99 per month. This allows you to spread out the cost of your boiler service over a year, making it a less noticeable cost to pay.
TIP: We also have other service plans to cover parts, labour and cover to the radiators, along with valves and pipework! Check out our servicing page for more information.
One other advantage? When you pay every month, it becomes the gas engineer’s responsibility to make sure you don’t miss your annual service. So, you won’t have to worry about forgetting to book ever again!
From an engineer’s perspective
Unsure about the age of your Glow-worm boiler? The internet is your friend, and you should be able to look up the make and model online. You could also check your paperwork (if you have it) to pinpoint exactly when your boiler was installed.
All you have to do is look up the make and model on the internet. Checking your paperwork (if you have it) can also help you pinpoint how old it is. Servicing older models is usually fine, but remember that even newer generation Glow-worm boilers only last around 12 – 15 years.
So, when it comes to repairs, ask yourself how much life you can realistically get out of your Glow-worm boiler. You might find that in the long-run, it’d be cheaper to repair – and you’d probably also save some money on your energy bills!
Remember, engineers like myself have to put safety first, as we’re governed by the Gas Safe Register. Even if that means you being without heating and hot water for a couple of days!
Therefore, if we highlight a fault, necessary repair work, or changes to meet new regulations – it’s for a reason. We’re not just trying to ruin your day!
Conclusion
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading, and by now you should have a better idea of how much a Glow-worm boiler service costs. I’m sure you’ll agree the price is worth it if it means ensuring you and your family are kept safe. Plus, if your boiler isn’t running efficiently, it could be costing you more on your gas bills!

Hi we have a glow worm ultimate 40ff conventional boiler which has worked very well since installation about 25 years. The only problem we sometimes have is that the fan needs lubricating. We have solar panels and a device called immersion on the tank so the solar panels heat the water. If at a later date we decided to have a new boiler (not combi) would it be feasible as the solar panels are around the flue? A local engineer told us it could not be done? Hope you don’t mind me asking the question.
Hi. My boiler has just stopped working. We have tried to get the pilot light to re ignite the fan was making an un usal noise last night. The serial number is 0306671
Would you be able to advise me of a local engineer to me. I live near Canterbury. CT4
