Curious about whether you can order radiators in any colour you want?
Perhaps you’ve planned out your new decor right down to a tee, and you want some nice new radiators to match. Or maybe you just want to get something different to the standard white that’s in everyone’s homes.
The good news is that these days, you absolutely can!
As an experienced engineer, I’m going to explain more on choosing your own colour of radiators, below.
What are your colour options?
You might be surprised to know that there’s not really a limit to the colours you can choose. You can order your radiators in absolutely any colour you like! However, you won’t be able to choose them in multicolours yet – and tartan is a definite no!
Although you can technically have any colour, it’ll cost you. You have to set up the paint and the spray (you could even spray them yourself but most people just order them). This can be cost-prohibitive, and paying for just one will work out less economically than paying for five or six.
Think about it; the factory will have to set up the spray facilities and machines, plus clean ’em afterwards. All that work for just one radiator means a hefty set-up cost – which is the real expense.
Which colours are the most popular?
Typically, white is the no.1 choice for standard panel radiators. But that doesn’t mean you have to be like everyone else! You can get these sprayed any colour of your choosing. As for column radiators, the next most popular is a graphite grey colour.
Surprisingly, black is also a popular choice. Although, not everyone knows that matte black radiators are terrible for heat output – they can lose up to 15% of their heat with that colour change!
Which brings me nicely to my next point. Before you set your heart on a specific colour, check that the paint won’t affect the heat they provide to your home. Get your engineer’s advice, and ensure that if anything, your home will be overheated. Better that than feeling cold in the depths of winter!
TIP: Who would have thought the colour of a radiator affects the heat it gives out? Check out my recent blog to learn more.
Advice from an experienced engineer
Worried you can’t get a radiator in the right colour? Well, you absolutely can! Realistically, you can get radiators in every height, width, depth and material (aluminium, pressed steel etc.) – there’s an astronomical choice on the market!
I’d personally recommend looking on TradeRadiators.com. You can choose a pressed steel radiator or column radiator there. There’s also a handy dropdown with the most popular choices! At the bottom of their site, they say they can also do special orders.
One thing I will say? Just be sure you get the right sizes! As you can’t return them if they’re wrong. Don’t forget to measure the space for valves.
I actually had a customer a while back who I actually thought was joking when he said he wanted his radiators three different colours. He wanted to use pantone colours – which is what publishers and printed use when selecting specific colours. He ordered them in graphite grey, along with a very specific white and red.
I always recommend ordering through your engineer if possible. However, don’t be put off if your engineer doesn’t want anything to do with it. Most won’t want to fit anything other than standard. There are lots of great websites you can order bespoke colour radiators from online, including:
Obviously if you pick a colour the manufacturer has dealt with before, it will probably be a more reasonable price if you were to pick your own pantone colour. This would be a special commission – a bit like commissioning a painting.
Conclusion
Thanks for reading. Hopefully this blog has been of some help when realising that yes – you can order any colour of radiator you fancy! You may want to even order a bespoke colour to suit your exact requirements. However, bear in mind that it’s probably cheaper ordering five or six rather than just the one!
Also, check with your engineer that he or she will be happy to fit your new radiators. Some of them won’t want to install anything other than the norm!
