Considering the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30CDi system boiler for your home?
Market leader Worcester Bosch is a favourite with homeowners and engineers alike (and has been voted Which? ‘Best Buy’ for several years running as a result. Plus, if you’re looking for a super efficient system boiler, the 30CDi could be an ideal choice.
But how can you be sure it’s up to the job of heating your home? Well, there are some ways you can at least get a better idea (however, I’d still recommend seeking advice from 2 – 3 experienced engineers to be absolutely sure).
As an engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the Edinburgh area, I’m going to review this boiler fully below. So, you can make a more informed choice.
Introduction
I’m very familiar with this particular boiler. A lot of people get stuck between the 30CDi and the 30i (if that sounds like you, you should check out my recent blog on the subject *INSERT LINK*) – after all, there’s only £40 difference in the price. Although, there are some key differences that make 30CDi system stand out.
For instance, I once had a client who wanted to fit a Worcester Bosch system boiler, but the engineer before me told them it was a no-go. This was because the flue would only run 6 metres. Turns out he’d only looked at the 30i, without realising that the 30CDi could go an extra 1900mm on flue length.
So, in a case like this, the 30CDi can make all the difference – and it sometimes means you CAN have the Worcester Bosch system boiler you need!
Lots of homeowners choose system boilers because they’re cleaner, quieter and more energy efficient than standard heat-only boilers. However, you have to be prepared for a bit of extra upheaval, as it’ll be necessary to switch to a pressurised system. Especially if your flooring is sealed or concrete!
Outputs and flow rates
With a central heating output of 30kW, the 30CDi is perfect for heating a large family home (3 – 5 bedrooms) with 10 – 14 radiators. But if you have a larger home, with lovely high ceilings and stone floors or big, original windows (no double glazing), you might find you’re more suited to the 35CDi classic. If in doubt, your engineer can help.
This awesome system boiler should be able to heat your existing or new hot water tank. So, you can expect the same flow rates as you’re accustomed to in your home (assuming it’s not a new build!). Alternatively, you can also opt to fit an unvented cylinder with either of these Worcester Bosch beauties, for even more power to your taps.
Size and special features
The Worcester Bosch 30CDi measures in at 760mm x 440mm x 360mm – this is a wall-hung boiler. It also comes with a steel wall-mounting jig, so that your engineer can fit your pipework behind the boiler. Which means it can be pre-piped before it’s even fitted to the wall! (Not that it should be your concern)
There’s also the option to fit this particular boiler with Worcester Bosch’s own range of high efficiency indirect, solar compatible Greenstore cylinders.
Guarantee
Right, onto another vitally important element. If you’re investing in a new boiler, you’ll want to be sure you’ll be covered – just on the off-chance anything goes wrong. The 30CDi comes with Worcester Bosch’s amazing 10-year no-quibble guarantee when fitted along with the brand’s own cylinder, controls and magnetic central heating filter by an accredited installer.
Alternatively, you could just opt for the filter and controls, and still get an 8-year guarantee on your new system boiler. However, in my opinion, saving a little money now doesn’t compare to that extra two years’ worth of cover.
TIP: All Worcester Bosch’s guarantees are subject to the boiler being serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Tech specs:
Now, here’s the part where I give you a brief overview of all the important technical info you need to know about this boiler. (TIP: I always like to tell people to treat this next part as a rough guide. An engineer should always check your home’s heat loss before installing a new boiler, to be sure it will meet your needs)
