save-on-heating-boHere at Superwarm Services, we’re all for new heating systems. But we’re also for being more efficient in general.

And whether you’re in the market for a new heating system or just trying to make the most of the system you have, we have some simple and easy ways to lower heating bills by up to 30%.

1. Turn your thermostat down by a few degrees

We know sounds obvious right? You’d be amazed by how few people actually do this.

Turning your thermostat down by just 1 degree can save you £50 annually.  And you can lower heating bills as much as 20% a year by simply adjusting your thermostat by 4-to-8 degrees.

2. In the winter, turn down your heat at night or when you’re gone

Also, close your curtains at night to keep in the day’s heat. The best curtains are thick and well-fitted, and cover the whole window, preferably reaching the floor.

Make sure windows and doors fit tightly into their frames and use draft stopping tape around windows and doors. Even a rolled up towel will help keep in the heat and lower heating bills.

3. Install modern controls

By installing a programmable thermostat you can be sure your heat isn’t running while no-one’s home. It also means you don’t burn unnecessary energy heating your home if it’s been left to cool down for too long. Heating a cold home requires more energy than keeping a comfortable home comfortable.

4. Install room thermostats in a living room

Avoid the hall, which is a common place for thermostats.  Hall temperatures can be affected by the front door being opened, which allows cold air in and gives false readings to the thermostat.

5. Install a zone heating system

A zoned heating system allows greater control over heat distribution throughout your home. You can turn up the heat only where you need it, only when you need it—which results in substantial savings and lower heating bills.

6. Purchase and install an A-rated condensing boiler

An A-rated condensing boiler is up to 96% efficient, saving you 35% annually over an outdated F-rated boiler, and up to £450 in annual savings.

Tip: Demystify boiler ratings with our Homeowner’s Handbook to Understanding Combi Boiler Energy Ratings.

7. Be certain to have your cylinder fitted with thermostat

If your hot water is stored in a cylinder, the thermostat will prevent it from being hotter than it needs to be. Once the water has reached the temperature you have set, the heat supply from the boiler will be turned off. This saves energy, which saves you money.

Cylinder thermostats are usually fitted between one quarter and one third of the way up the cylinder. They have temperature scales marked; you should set them at between 60ºC and 65ºC. This is hot enough to kill off harmful bacteria in the water, but it’s also hot enough to scald you.

For extra safety consider installing a thermostatic mixing valve that will automatically ensure hot water is at a safe temperature.

Implementing one (or more!) of these tips can help you increase the efficiency of your central heating system and lower heating bills for your family this winter.
