Are you looking for tips and advice to help reduce your boiler replacement costs?

If your old boiler has finally given up the ghost, or you’ve just moved into a new property only to find the unexpected extra cost of having to fork out for a new boiler, it can be be an incredibly stressful scenario to be in.

Especially if you depend on your boiler for hot water, or if you’re a landlord with tenants to consider, you may not even have enough time to stall and save.

However, the good news is, there are numerous little things you can do that will add up when it comes to saving money on your boiler replacement – it just depends on how much you don’t mind doing yourself.

So, below are five tips to help save money on your boiler replacement costs:

1. Opt for a (slightly) cheaper brand

There are so many different brands of boilers to choose from; some more expensive than others. If you’re looking at trimming your costs, I’d still recommend going for a boiler with a good 7 – 8 year guarantee, but that doesn’t meant the top, most expensive brand, either.

Check out our combi boiler brand comparison to give you a better idea of what’s currently available on the market.

I carried out a boiler replacement recently where the client wanted the boiler replaced really cheaply, and decided on a Baxi combi boiler with 7-year guarantee, as it was cheaper than the 10-year model and other similar brands on the market.

He took our advice and did not choose a really cheap brand. He also decided to use his existing controls (more about that below) and took the rubbish to the tip himself (see point 3.) which saved him around £250!

HINT: You may find Baxi best when it comes to value for money, but there’s also Glow-worm to look out for.

2. Keep your existing controls

Many boilers are fitted with modern programmable room thermostats and controls. These might have been upgraded in the past few years, or have managed to outlive your current boiler. Keeping this controls could actually save you around £100 – £200, so worth considering!

However, if you are looking for new controls, I’d recommend asking your chosen engineer for advice on which ones are the best value for money – they may even be able to offer you a deal!

3. Take a trip to the tip

Rubbish removal can end up being quite costly for homeowners. This is because companies have to be SEPA-registered in order to carry waste, or use a SEPA-registered company to collect rubbish.

So, disposing of your own waste with a quick trip to the tip could save you as much as £80-£100

4. Remove your own tanks

If you’re fitting a combi boiler and are having your existing tanks removed to make more space, this can often be quite a time-consuming job. Instead, get your engineer to drain the tanks and leave them in place.

Many people with a bit of DIY knowledge will happily strip out any redundant pipework and tanks in order to save you a bit of money – you could maybe even do it yourself! That way you’re only really paying the engineer to do the specialist work.

5. Shop around for the best deal

Finally, there’s nothing wrong with spending time searching for the best deal. In fact, I always tell people that getting 2 – 3 fixed price quotes is essential, so you’ll have a good idea of the deal you’re getting – without any hidden surprises!

However, always make sure you hire a competent Gas Safe registered engineer, and never pay cash or money up front – only when the job is done. Remember; if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Conclusion

I hope you’ve found this post helpful when looking for ways to save money on your boiler replacement costs. You’d be surprised how much you could save just by following some of the tips I mentioned above!
