petsAre you worried about how the upheaval of a boiler installation could affect your pet?

Living in Edinburgh, our dogs always get a bit anxious and jumpy around the time of year when fireworks roll around (especially on Bonfire Night and Hogmanay) – it’s the same whenever there’s visitors they don’t know.

If like me, your pets are just part of your family, you’ll probably have some concerns about how they’ll cope with the stress and potential upheaval of getting a new boiler installed in your home.

That’s why I’ve put together the following tips and advice on what to expect from a boiler installation if you have pets in the house.

The bottom line is:

It’s up to you

The biggest thing I want to make clear in this blog post, is that it really comes down to your own personal judgement as to whether or not you want to have your pets in the house during a boiler installation.

It also depends on the type of pets you have, and whether they are stress-prone or can become anxious if there’s a lot of loud noises, strangers and disruption going on around them.

You may wish to take time off work to stay with your dog or cat to ensure they will be okay whilst your new boiler is being installed, which is also perfectly acceptable.

House cats should be fine, as long as they are kept in a separate room or carry-case for the duration of the boiler installation. This is because engineers will often leave the doors open as they go in and out of your house carrying tools and bits of equipment.

Check company policy in advance

Most engineers will be perfectly okay with having pets in the house during a boiler installation, although they should be in no way responsible for looking after your pets while they are in your home.

This means you shouldn’t be calling up your engineer up and asking them to feed your dog, or take it out for a walk – that’s not in their contract.

If in doubt…

If you’re in any doubt about keeping your pets in the house during your boiler installation, I recommend getting a friend or family member to look after them temporarily until the engineers have finished the job.

Conclusion

If you have pets and are worried about how they’ll fare during a boiler installation, be assured that there will be no danger involved, as long as you supervise them or keep them in a separate room.

However, if you do have any doubts about how your particularly nervous pet will cope, I recommend you contact a friend or relative who will be able to look after them for the duration of the boiler installation.
