Are you looking to replace the floor standing boiler in your medium-to-large Edinburgh home?

If you’ve done your research, you’ll probably know your best option is to get a direct replacement fitted, such as the Worcester Bosch Greenstar FS 30cdi or the Greenstar FS 42cdi.

But which is best for your home? To help you decide, I’ve compared the two in this special review.

So, without further ado…

Introduction

If you have an old, floor standing boiler, the Worcester Bosch Greenstar FS range are perfect for doing a direct swap with usually very little need for any alterations with your existing pipework.

It’s a lot less hassle than changing to a wall boiler, and these boilers are more than powerful enough to provide all the heating and hot water needed for your medium-to-large home.

Plus, Worcester Bosch have has been Which’s ‘Best Buy’ four years running, delivering outstanding quality and boilers that really last the distance – so you’ll be getting great value for money in the Greenstar FS 30cdi and FS 42cdi.

Output and flow rate

There’s quite a large difference in the heating output for these floor standing boilers; while the Worcester Bosch Greenstar FS 30cdi provides an output of 30kw, the FS 42cdi provides a much greater output of 42kw. Remember this boiler heats your radiators however has to have enough power to heat your hot water tank. This could be between 120 litres to 200 litres depending on how many bathrooms you have.

The FS 30cdi is perfect for 3-4 bedroom homes with two bathrooms and a 120-litre hot water cylinder. Any larger than that, and I’d recommend sizing up to the FS 42cdi, which can heat a 4-5 bedroom home with up to three bathrooms and a 200-litre hot water cylinder.

If you’re having trouble deciding which one you need, have your engineer take some heat loss calculations in your property and find out your exact hot water needs.

Remember to always take into account the worst scenario of -5 degrees whilst running three baths, heating water and your radiators at the same time. If the result is under 30kw, opt for the FS 30cdi. Above that, or on the dividing line, opt for the FS 42cdi.

Size and extra features

These are large, floor standing boilers with a height of 850mm, width of 400mm and a depth of 600mm, with built-in controls and an efficiency rating of A. This boiler is designed to fit under the kitchen worktop just like a fridge or washing machine.

One other consideration is to get your engineer to check your existing pipework before making your final decision. This is because some older systems were fitted with a combined feed and expansion pipe, which would have to be upgraded when installing this boiler.

The Greenstar FS range can only be fitted as a fully pumped system, so old-fashioned gravity pipe systems would have to be upgraded.

Guarantee

These boilers come with a guarantee of up to 10 years, when fitted with Worcester Bosch filter and hot water cylinder. Another huge plus point is that Worcester Bosch currently has probably the best no quibble guarantee on the market right now.

That’s because there’s no catch in the small print, or extra credit card charges for call-outs, unlike other guarantees from similar companies. I like to think I look out for my customers, which is why I always recommend Worcester Bosch’s guarantee over any of the other brands – you can thank me later.
