Do you need a direct replacement for the old, regular boiler in your small-medium sized Edinburgh home?
Over the years, a lot of my customers have asked me about what to do when their old, regular boilers have packed up.
It can be a tough choice, especially if you don’t want the upheaval that comes with switching to a combi, which is why I single out the Worcester Bosch Greenstar ri range as the perfect solution.
Not sure if it’s right for you? Below, I’ve put together an in-depth review so that you can learn all you need to know about the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24ri.
Introduction
Worcester Bosch has an unbeatable reputation for providing quality boilers, having won Which’s ‘Best Buy’ four years running – so the The Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24ri is already a pretty safe bet.
This particular boiler allows for a quick fix if you’re looking for a direct replacement for your old, regular boiler, and can be installed in just 3-4 hours. This is because all of your radiators, pipework and tank can just be left in, the boiler replaced and the system quickly flushed out.
I’ve recently reviewed the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 15ri (INSERT LINK) and 18ri (INSERT LINK), and I’d recommend taking a look at the those just to check you’re making the right choice for your home.
The main difference separating the Greenstar 24ri from the ones above is that it will provide just that little bit extra power to the heating and hot water tank.
Output and flow rate
Its output of 24kw to the central heating makes the Greenstar 24ri a regular boiler that really packs a punch. It will comfortable heat a 3-4 bedroom home with around 8-10 radiators.
Saying that, there is the option of the 30cdi if you think it still may not be big enough for the job. If you’re in any doubt, get your chosen engineer to take a look at your home to help determine the right output level for you – I’d always recommend this anyway.
Bearing in mind this is a high efficiency condensing boiler, it’s important to get your engineer to check your pipework is up to specification, as it is not compatible with gravity hot water system.
The 24ri has to be fitted with a fully pumped system.
Size and special features
I’ve fitted this boiler on a few occasions where other boilers simply weren’t compact enough for the job. At only 600mm high, 390mm wide and 270mm deep, it’s a great size for fitting inside a standard kitchen wall cupboard.
This allows for the least amount of hassle when finding somewhere to store your boiler, and without having to worry about mismatching kitchen units.
Another great advantage of this high efficiency compact boiler is that it does not require any extra ventilation, so you won’t have to worry about fitting air grilles to the door or top and bottom of your cupboard.
Guarantee
Just like all the other models in the Greenstar ri range, the 24ri model comes with Worcester Bosch’s brilliant no quibble 8-year boiler guarantee* The company also has its own dedicated engineers to attend to call-outs if anything does happen to go wrong.
Worcester Bosch currently has what I think is the best boiler guarantee on the market. It’s true that there are longer guarantees out there from other boiler companies, but there’s often a catch in the small print, or extra credit card charges before they’ll even agree to a call-out (Vaillant & Baxi are exceptions to this).

Conclusion
The above review contains everything you need to know about the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24ri. It’s a regular boiler, and is perfect if you’re looking for a direct replacement to your old one with very minimal upheaval.
The 24kw output to the central heating makes this boiler ideal for a 3-4 bedroom home with 8 – 10 radiators. However, if you have a larger home with high ceilings and stone walls, I’d recommend getting an engineer to take a look just to be on the safe side.
The 24ri is a compact model, so it’s perfect for fitting in your kitchen cupboard or Edinburgh press – plus, it’s compatible with solar heating! Finally, you’ll benefit from Worcester Bosch’s fantastic no-quibble 8-year guarantee* which will have you covered for all eventualities.

What do you think of the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24ri?

Thank you John, this has been really helpful. My lovely old lady Potterton floor standing boiler has now heated her last, it was over 30 years old and brilliant to the last. Now I have to replace and British Gas has recommended I get the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24Ri ErP.
I have a 4 b/r house built in the 1930’s with 13 rads and a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard. I am going to get a new one but want to keep this and don’t want a combi for this reason.
Reading your review, I am just on the borderline for size so do you think this boiler would be sufficient? Obviously the BG engineer said it would be ideal but I would be interested in another or other opinions please. Also, the Potterton never had to have anything replaced ever, nothing is built that way any longer so how reliable is this boiler please?
I am grateful for your time, many thanks.
Gwen
Hi Gwen, was the 24Ri the right choice? Was it big enough to heat 13 rads?
I am just about to do the same and wondered what your outcome was.
Pete
I am in the same situation as Gwen, large bungalow with 11 radiators and hevw virtually decided on a 30Ri, but advised by a heating engineer that all I needed was this one or a 24Ri. Would rather have too much capacity than borderline.
will 24ri boiler be sufficient for 11 radiators
We have a Potterton from the early 80s that has now packed up. Now it has to be replaced. I’m dreading the cost!
